The Arts of China, intended both for the general reader and for the serious student, presents a fascinating and balanced picture of the arts of China from the Stone Age to the present day. The author is concerned not only with art, but with Chinese philosophy, religion and the realm of ideas, while he places the arts in their political and social setting. Hence his book is not merely a history of art but, to some degree, a cultural history of China as well.
First published in 1961, it appeared in a revised edition as A Short History of Chinese Art in 1967, and again, further revised and ex-panded, under its present title in 1973. Since then, many exciting new discoveries have been made in China, among them the first major Shang Dynasty site in the Yangtse Valley and the tomb pit of the first Ch'in Emperor (about 210 .c.), containing hundreds-perhaps thousands-of life-size pottery figures of warriors and attendants, one of which is illustrated.
For this new edition Professor Sullivan has made further revisions, based on recent discoveries and research and on the results of his own visits to China in 1973 and 1975. Some sections have been rewritten, more attention has been given to painting, and the book is both larger in format and more generously illustrated than its predecessors, with more than three hundred illustrations, many in color.
