Ruth T. Costantino's
life is, in looking back, very much in the tradition of a Henry James novel. She was born in New York City, and at the age of fifteen went abroad to study the piano, several languages and the German classics. Here she ventured to make what proved to be a monumental purchase and the first of her career - a 16th century German pen drawing for the equivalent of 12½ American cents! Returning to New York for a whirl of debutante parties and the serious business of becoming a concert pianist, she found herself drawn instead to her early enthusiasm for art and antiques and began an intensive study in this field, opening her own gallery while still in her teens. In 1926, she married an Italian nobleman and settled in Rome. Her husband died a war hero, and Mrs. Costantino subsequently returned to this country to resume her col-lecting. At present, with over forty years of experience, she is a highly regarded authority known for a gallery with the finest collection available today. She has two children, Arturo, who is in the foreign service, and Helen, an artist and decorator in her own right, who drew the illustrations for this book.
